Acclaimed for the immediacy, sensitivity and depth of his interpretations, Sergei Babayan's performances explore a stylistically diverse repertoire. He was the first pianist from the former USSR who was able to compete without government sponsorship after the collapse of the system. He believes that a recital should reveal a spiritual dimension, and as a result, his playing sustains an intensity that never fails to captivate. Mr. Babayan studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Gornostayeva, Naumov, Pletnev and Vlasenko. He has been on the faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Music since 1992.
